Saving Goal Calculator: Why this works backward from the other calculators
Most calculators start with a monthly contribution and tell you where you will end up. This one starts with where you want to end up and tells you the monthly contribution required to get there. The dashed gold line on the chart marks your goal, and the solid line shows your balance climbing to meet it over the number of years you choose.
If the required monthly amount looks higher than you expected, there are really only three levers to pull: save for more years, start with more money today, or accept a lower goal. Try adjusting the years slider and watch how much the required monthly number drops when you give yourself more time. If you would rather see how a fixed monthly contribution grows on its own instead of solving backward from a goal, our compound growth calculator covers that direction.
For general guidance on setting realistic savings goals and building an emergency fund alongside longer term targets, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has independent, non commercial resources worth reviewing. You can find them on consumerfinance.gov.
